What Decides the Right Crane for a Heavy Lift?

A 130 tonne crane can’t lift 130 tonnes at every distance. Capacity drops as the load moves further from the crane, so we look at four things together when planning a heavy lift.

Four checks before we confirm the crane:

01

The load
Weight, dimensions and centre of gravity determine the rigging and crane configuration. Supplier drawings or a load schedule help here.

02

Radius and height
The distance from the crane to the set-down point, and the height the load needs to clear, often matter as much as the weight.

03

Setup space
Larger cranes need room for outriggers and counterweight. Our 130t crane can set up on intermediate (5.1m) or full (7.5m) outrigger spans, depending on the space available.

04

Ground and site conditions
We assess ground stability, powerlines, nearby buildings and any traffic management requirements before lift day.

Want to understand the numbers? Our guides on how to read a crane load chart and how to calculate the right crane size explain how capacity changes with reach.

Heavy Lifting Cranes in Our Fleet

Our fleet ranges from 16 to 130 tonnes rated capacity. When a job calls for heavy duty crane rental, we usually start with one of these all-terrain cranes.

Suited to infrastructure, industrial and heavier construction lifts.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

What is the largest crane you have for heavy lifts?

Our largest is a 130 tonne Grove GMK5130-1 all-terrain crane with a 60m main boom and fly jib options up to 32m. Its actual capacity depends on the radius, boom configuration and setup.

2

Can a 130 tonne crane lift 130 tonnes?

Only close to the crane and in the right configuration. Capacity reduces as the load moves further away. Our load chart guide explains how this works.

3

How much does heavy lift crane hire cost in Sydney?

It depends on the crane size, reach, hire duration and site setup. Send through the load and site details for a free quote, or read our crane hire cost guide.

4

Do I need a lift plan?

It depends on the lift. Simpler lifts may only need a basic assessment, while larger or more complex lifts may need a detailed plan. We’ll discuss this with you before confirming the job.

5

Can you inspect the site first?

Yes, where required. We can assess access, ground conditions, working space and obstacles before recommending a crane.

6

Is an operator included?

Yes. Every crane hire includes a licensed, experienced operator.

7

Can I hire a heavy lift crane for one day?

Yes. Short-term and one-day hire may be available, depending on the crane and current bookings.

8

Do you do weekend, after-hours or short-notice lifts?

Yes, where scheduling allows. Call 1300 024 454 as early as possible to check availability.

9

Which industries do you work with?

We work with builders, project managers, site supervisors, steel contractors, HVAC installers, industrial operators and trade contractors across commercial, industrial and civil projects.
